Oscar Micheaux : A pioneering filmmaker prefiguring independent directors like Spike Lee and Tyler Perry. Between 1919 and 1948 he wrote, directed, and produced around 40 films, many of which addressed issues of race, where black characters were filmed doing things that at the time seemed unthinkable onscreen. His films depicted the basic humanity of characters wrestling with issues like racial ambiguity. Even though his provocative films upset the audience (black people that were upset over the depiction of the black lower class or whites that did not like depictions of racist villainy), Oscar remained undaunted. His last movie was the first film starring black actors to debut in a Broadway theatre. "I have always tried to make my photoplays present the truth, to lay before the race a cross-section of its own life, to view the coloured heart from close range"
