Love Letters

— Inspired by letters, the Elyse was born. A compact handbag reminiscent of an envelope. While creating the Elyse it got us thinking and inspired by old letters and the magical love stories that surround them. At the end we create a product but these products become special because of the reasons they exist. The Elyse shows that we haven’t forgotten the past and those who did beautiful things for love. Autumn is the perfect time to romanticize about the past, and what a better way to do it, than by reading old love letters?

Simone de Beauvoir to Lanzmann

The feminist icon Simon de Beauvoir was in a famously open relationship with the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre but, as she explains in her letters, he was the only one whom she truly loved and “adored”.

“I thought I would never say the words that now come naturally to me when I see you – I adore you. I adore you with all my body and soul ... You are my destiny, my eternity, my life.”

Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas

Oscar Wilde was imprisoned, bankrupted and sent to exile throughout his life mainly because of his unapologetic passion and dedication to love. In his letters to Lord Alfred Douglas he expresses his feelings while parted from his lover and inspiration.

I must see you soon — you are the divine thing I want — the thing of grace and genius! Why are you not here, my dear, my wonderful boy — ? I fear I must leave; no money, no credit, and a heart of lead — Ever your own, Oscar

Frida Kahlo to Diego Rivera

The famous Mexican artists were in a relationship for twenty seven years in which both of them encountered numerous affairs but also found love and inspiration.

Diego, my love, Remember that once you finish the fresco we will be together forever once and for all, without arguments or anything, only to love one another. Behave yourself and do everything that Emmy Lou tells you. I adore you more than ever. Your girl, Frida (Write me) Diego: Nothing compares to your hands, nothing like the green-gold of your eyes. My body is filled with you for days and days. You are the mirror of the night. The violent flash of lightning. The dampness of the earth. The hollow of your armpits is my shelter. All my joy is to feel life spring from your flower-fountain that mine keeps to fill all the paths of my nerves which are yours.
